Gorilla – King Kong
This sculpture was created some time ago as a commissioned piece. The starting point was a gorilla character, although during the process the form gradually began to resemble the visual character of King Kong.
The sculpture was made in Super Sculpey, as this material allows me to work most precisely on fine details. If the intention had been a more sketch-like form, I would have chosen a different material. The figure was built on a wire and aluminum foil armature.
The goal was to create a form that would feel both realistic and expressive. However, the client requested that the sculpture remain in a specific pose, which limited the overall dynamics of the piece. To compensate for this and introduce more internal tension and expressive force, I developed the gorilla’s fur in a more aggressive and energetic way.
As a result, the sculpture remains compositionally static, while its expression is carried mainly through the facial tension and the dynamic treatment of the fur structure.
The project dates back to around 2019.
